Prioritizing Mental Health Amidst Crisis

In the wake of the ongoing conflict in Manipur, the need for mental health support has become increasingly urgent—especially for those displaced and living in relief camps. Recognizing this, IRMA in collaboration with Action Aid organized a One-Day Community Psychosocial Care Education Camp aimed at promoting understanding, empathy, and healing.

🙏 Program Launch

The camp was officially opened by Mr. Thangminlen Haokip, Coordinator of Psycho-Social Care Giving at Action Aid. His opening remarks welcomed participants and introduced the goals of the session, setting a reflective tone with a brief prayer that underscored the emotional depth and significance of the gathering.

🧠 Understanding the Role of Psychosocial Care Givers

Participants were introduced to the essential work carried out by Psycho-Social Care Givers, especially in Kangpokpi District’s relief camps. These caregivers are on the frontlines, helping victims of conflict cope with trauma and psychological stress.

The session shed light on the mental health toll of displacement, including:

  • Prolonged exposure to violence
  • Uncertainty about the future
  • Separation from loved ones
  • The strain of living in temporary shelters

🎓 Expert Insight: Letkhoson Haokip’s Presentation

The central presentation was led by Letkhoson Haokip, a psychologist and mental health counsellor. His talk offered a holistic view of health, emphasizing that mental well-being is just as critical as physical health.

Key topics covered included:

  • Common psychological conditions in conflict zones: stress, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and social withdrawal.
  • The importance of early intervention and community-based support systems.

📖 Real-Life Case Studies & Open Sharing

To create deeper engagement, Letkhoson presented real-life case studies to illustrate the complexities of trauma and recovery. These stories helped attendees relate and reflect on their own experiences, and encouraged them to share personal journeys of coping and resilience.

💬 Interactive Discussions

Participants took part in a powerful open dialogue, where:

  • Shared stories built solidarity and emotional connection.
  • The act of listening and speaking created a safe space for healing.
  • Community members acknowledged each other’s pain, which proved cathartic and empowering.

🎤 Closing Remarks

The program closed with words from Mr. Khupneithang Suantak, a Psycho-Social Care Giver, who expressed heartfelt thanks to the resource person and the participants. He encouraged everyone to continue conversations on mental health and to support one another in healing.

🌱 Looking Ahead: Group Healing & Sharing Circles

As a follow-up to the camp’s success, IRMA announced the launch of a Group Healing and Sharing Program—a safe and structured initiative that will help those living in relief camps find community, process trauma, and rebuild hope together.

🕊️ Final Takeaway

This one-day camp was more than just a seminar—it was a moment of connection, healing, and awakening. It served as a powerful reminder that in times of crisis, mental health care is not a luxury, but a necessity.
